Trend Report: Resort 2014

Resort collections are often overlooked because they do not have all the fanfare of traditional Fashion Weeks.  However, Michael Kors told Vogue that Resort and Pre-Fall collections are the times he sells the most clothes.   And they can basically be whatever season he wants them to be!

Some designers stay traditional and show warm weather pieces, perfect for the jet-set crowd who take off to tropical locales during December and January.  Other designers show more fall and winter looks for, well, the rest of us.

Either way, it is fun to see what designers can come up with when not constrained by a “Season”.  Here are a few trends we spotted on the runways this year.

Jason Wu, Maiyet, Missoni

Whether they were sweaters, blouses or sweatshirts, the tops of resort ’14 almost unanimously bared some midriff.  Pair with a high-waisted bottom if you love the look but aren’t quite comfortable with belly buttons in the office.

Stella McCartney, Roksanda Ilincic , Burberry

Big sparkly embellishments were many designers guilty pleasure this year and boy are we glad!  Anyone who endorses sparkle is alright in our book.

Thakoo, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam

We noticed a lot of dressed up “athletic gear” this year.  However just because sweatshirts are comfy, doesn’t mean they can’t be chic.

Narcisco Rodriguez, Peter Pilotto, Vera Wang

While we did see lots of color, black and white is here to stay.  In fact, many collections omitted color completely and decided to stick with this Parisian staple.  Nothing is chicer or easier than black and white!

It was hard to pick favorites to share with you, so go take a look through the runway pictures–you will not be disappointed.  You can also check out our Pinterest board to see all our favorite looks!
